Accident could lead to WtE expansion in Delhi

Some days after a part of the Ghazipur landfill in Delhi collapsed and killed two people, Lieutenant-Governor Anil Baijal has ordered the municipal corporations to increase their waste processing by using the existing capacity as well as expanding the capacity of the WtE plants. As reported by The Hindu, the East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) collects 4,650 metric tons of garbage every day, 2,600 metric tons of which is MSW. EDMC processes 1,300 metric tons per day at its WtE plant in Ghazipur. In a first phase, another 650 metric tons of MSW would be sent to the plant soon. For the remaining 650 metric tons, Baijal directed the South Delhi Municipal Corporation to process it at its Okhla-Timarpur WtE plant. The Lieutenant-Governor also ordered to increase the daily waste processing capacity of the Narela-Bawana WtE plant in North Delhi from 2,000 metric tons to 3,900 metric tons per day.
