BBMP to deploy ragpickers for dry waste collection

The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike, in association with several non-profit organisations, has deployed a network of rag pickers in three wards, for door-to-door collection of dry waste.

In a month’s time, about 38 wards will come under this scheme. The Palike plans to extend this to all 198 wards eventually. As an incentive to keep rag pickers in keeping dry waste away from landfills, the rag pickers will be free to sell the high-value waste such as plastic to recycling plants or scrap dealers and earn an income, a BBMP official informed Bangalore Mirror.

About 10,000 rag pickers will be involved in the BBMP’s latest initiative.
