Bengaluru civic body to charge waste collection tax

The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has announced it will implement bye-laws on solid waste management (SWM), which entail asking home-owners to pay money to hand over garbage to conservancy workers.

“The bye-laws on solid waste management have been notified. The BBMP will collect a service charge from property owners to give segregated garbage to conservancy workers,” said BBMP Commissioner BH Anil Kumar.

The Times of India reports that this charge will be over and above the SWM cess that is already built into the property tax. Depending on the size of the property, the civic body collects anywhere between Rs 200 and Rs 600 as SWM cess.
