The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is still awaiting an environmental permit for its Deonar Waste to Energy (WtE) project in Mumbai.

MidDay reports that the clearance might take another four months and until then construction will not be started at the site. Environmental clearance is needed since the incinerator bottom ash is planned to be buried in the landfill area.

As reported by SWI in early May 2021, 300 citizens had written to the BMC regarding their objections to the WtE project, citing the impact on health and the living environment. Back in April 2013, the high court had directed the BMC to close the landfills in Deonar and Mulund due to the lack of a sustainable plan for waste treatment.
