Probably for the first time, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) budget mentions a “circular economy” that will benefit not only the civic body and citizens, but the environment.
The Times of India reports that the budget also aims to cut quantity of waste to 5,000 tonnes per day by 2030 by diverting garbage to waste-to-energy plants of 1800 tonnes per day capacity. Similarly, construction and demolition waste will be reused by setting up a plant of 1,200 tonnes per day capacity. Energy will be sold to power distribution grids to earn revenue. At present, BMC collects 6,700 tonnes of waste daily.
