The seven-layer capping at Jawaharnagar dump yard, one of the biggest initiatives in the country in municipal solid waste management, has been completed, reports Telangana Today.
The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) had taken up the capping works during March last year in association with a private agency. The first layer of soil capping covering 130 acres was completed in June. Minor patch works remain.
Though the work was completed a little behind the schedule set by the State government, the municipal corporation has succeeded in transforming the dirty-looking area into green environs.
Now, the GHMC is exploring possibilities of generating power through the 100 vents dug up into the garbage.
