In a bid to ensure effective waste management in the city and hold the municipal authorities accountable, the Chandigarh Smart City Limited (CSCL) has initiated a six-crore project called Solid Waste Management Vehicle Tracking and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition.

CSCL is a special purpose vehicle that was formed in 2016 for designing and execution of projects under the Smart City Mission. Some of the projects under Chandigarh Smart City are being converged with ongoing missions like the Swachch Bharat Abhiyan, National Smart Grid Mission and other e-governance initiatives.

The project, pegged at nearly Rs 6 crore, involves setting up a control room that will monitor the garbage lifting exercise, movement of vehicles, time taken to collect garbage as well identifying repeat offenders.

The monitoring system will hold the garbage service providers accountable for the services and allow citizens to register their complains in case a garbage lifting vehicle fails to arrive at the designated time notified to the citizens through a mobile application. Service providers will also be able to register complains in case citizens fail to comply with garbage segregation norms.

The project has been handed over to a private contractor after a exhaustive tendering
process, as per The Times of India report.
