Chennai rolls back decision on user fee

A day after announcing it will implement a user fee for garbage collection from January 1, 2021, the Greater Chennai Corporation has decided to roll back its decision. The announcement was made following a request by representatives from residents and traders associations.

“This (user fee) has been suspended temporarily. We have not decided on when to start implementing it,” a senior Corporation official informed The New Indian Express.

As reported on SolidWasteIndia earlier this week, with the implementation of the user fee from the start of next year, the civic body had expected to bring in approximately Rs 80 crores as revenue annually.
