Chennai WtE projects delayed for further planning

Office of the Greater Chennai Corporation at Ripon Building

Several months after a feasibility study for two new WtE projects in the Chennai area was initiated, the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) is now supposing a general action plan for solid waste management. There seems to be lack of clarity as to how much solid waste is produced in the city in total and to what extent that amount might increase in the future. While experts say that more than 6,000 tpd of waste is being produced, the Greater Chennai Corporation states that the amount rather adds up to 4,500 tpd of waste. The new action plan should encompass best practices in the field of waste management, assess the sustainability of waste management and explore Waste-to-Energy techniques. However, further information has not been revealed by the source, The New Indian Express, on the two planned facilities in Perungudi and Kodungaiyur.
