The streets of Coimbatore could soon start piling up with garbage as more than 5,000 sanitary workers are on strike against the corporation for failing to provide them first preference while recruiting people for the posts of permanent sanitary workers.

The Times of India reports that the quantity of solid waste that reaches the city corporation’s dump yard at Vellalore has come down by 100 tonnes per day after over thousands of temporary sanitary workers boycotted their work and staged protests for the second consecutive day on Tuesday.

The workers argue that a lot of them have been working for the last ten years on a temporary basis with the corporation and their jobs should be regularized.
