Coimbatore to set up micro-compost centres in parks

The Madras High Court has allowed the setting up of micro-compost centres (MCC) in parks and playgrounds across Coimbatore. The civic body had proposed to decentralize waste collection and disposal by constructing MCCs at 69 places to reduce the amount of garbage being brought to the Vellalore dump yard.

However, residents had opposed the move, stating it is in violation of the Tamil Nadu Town and Country Planning Act, 1971, and moved High Court. The court said that location of MCCs cannot be construed as development in terms of the scheme of the 1971 Act or the Combined Development Rules, 2019. Therefore, any prohibition contemplated in the Acts do not apply to the implementation of the concept of solid waste management as envisaged in the SWM Rules, 2016.

Construction of some of the MCCs is already complete, reports The Times of India.
