There have been over 200 COVID-related deaths in the Mumbai civic body since March last year, with most of the deceased belonging to the Solid Waste Management department. A total of 46 SWM department employees have died due to Covid, followed by the BMC’s health department which has lost 38 employees.

At least 6,287 BMC staffers, including officers, have been infected by Covid-19 till date, reports The Times of India.

Mumbai is one of India’s worst-affected cities during the pandemic. The BMC maintains that it is offering adequate compensation to the families of the employees who succumbed, some of it through the Central government aid.
