Dadumajra SWM plant in Chandigarh mired in controversy

The Open Hand Monument, Chandigarh

The National Green Tribunal has found that machinery at a solid waste management (SWM) plant in Dadumajra is generating a high amount of dioxins into the environment, beyond permissible limits. A monitoring committee appointed by the NGT was informed by the representative of the SWM plant that out of 150MT material being received at the plant site, only 20-25 MT material is segregated.

The Indian Express reports that sources claim that inert material lying at the site was found to contain some portion of RDF, which could have been recovered by the plant’s operator, Jaypee.

The Chandigarh civic body is looking for a new company to manage the waste at the plant. Till then, no waste will be sent to the dumping site.
