The Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) has issued a penalty of Rs 40 lakh to the East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) after a massive fire at the Ghazipur landfill site recently.
The Delhi Environment Minister Mr Gopal Rai had issued the orders to the DPCC. The minister said the MCD’s carelessness was the major cause behind a massive fire at the site which contributed significantly to air pollution in the area.
According to The Times of India, the notice said, “Fire incidents at the dumpsite have been observed in the past indicating lack of measures taken and lack of vigilance by EDMC to prevent such incidents.”
It also stated that “EDMC has not only ignored the Environment Protection Act of 1986 but also violated the directions of the National Green Tribunal on the matters of solid waste management or garbage management.”
