A Memorandum of understanding (MoU) has been signed between Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) and the Gas Authority of India Ltd (GAIL). Under the agreement, GAIL will process around 300 tonnes per day (tpd) of organic waste into compressed biogas (CBG).
According to The New Indian Express, GAIL submitted a proposal to BBMP for the development of a 75 tpd facility worth around Rs 60 crore in April 2021. The source does not comment on the whether this 75 tpd project relates to the current MoU for using 300 tpd. Plans provide for submitting a more detailed project report to receive final permits. The plant should be up and running within 2 years. Handover of land is due within the next one to two months.
As of today, GAIL has laid 1,400 km of gas pipes in Bengaluru, Karnataka. The company has also agreed with Karnataka Power Corporation Limited (KPCL) for setting up a 11.5 MW WtE facility in Bidadi. Moreover, GAIL and Shell Technology Centre in Devanahalli have agreed to use mixed waste for the producing aviation fuel.
