The Gujarat Pollution Control Board (GPCB) has decided to enhance its biomedical waste (BMW) facilities in view of COVID-19 pandemic.
At present there are 20 Common Treatment Plants operational throughout the state where biomedical wastes, including COVID-19 waste, is being processed daily. Gujarat Pollution Control Board is facilitating the processing of over 33 tonnes of biomedical wastes on a daily basis across the state during this pandemic, including nearly 20 tonnes of COVID-19 waste.
Given the high number of COVID cases in Ahmedabad, the board has decided to double the waste processing capacity of Ahmedabad and the Mahesana Common Treatment plant. At present, both the plant have the capacity to treat biomedical waste up to 24 tonnes which will be enhanced to 51 tonnes in the coming days. At present, the state holds the capacity of processing biomedical waste up to tone 73 tonnes on a daily basis according to All India Radio.
