Himachal Pradesh PCB warns ULBs of mounting waste problems

The Himachal Pradesh State Pollution Control Board has warned the state’s urban bodies and department about the increasing number of landfills polluting the state. More than 190,000 tonnes of garbage is piled up in 15 cities across Himachal Pradesh and at 70 dumping sites.

The board has passed instructions for the urban development department and rural development and Panchayati Raj department to take necessary action for the scientific disposal of plastic waste. The board cautioned the civic body that the solid waste management rules lays down the roles and responsibilities of local authorities with regard to the scientific disposal of solid waste.

The National Green Tribunal has been monitoring the state’s waste management efforts. Urban bodies near the interstate border are being alerted to check banned plastic bags that people are bringing into the state, reports news agency UNI.
