The Chennai civic body has earned over Rs 64 lakh in less than month – that is, since May 27 – by selling over 85 lakh kg of manure produced in its composting centres.

The 15 zones of Greater Chennai Corporation’s micro-composting centres can treat up to 600 tonnes of wet rubbish, kitchen and vegetable waste every day. In Madhavaram, the civic council also operates a windrow compost yard, where 100 tonnes of biodegradable garbage are processed and supplied to the Tamil Nadu Cooperative Marketing Federation.

The civic body also organizes weekly composting workshops, which can be purchased from local division offices.
