As Hyderabad moves towards its vision of turning bin-free, the Swacch Auto Tippers (SAT) engaged for door-to-door collection of garbage are struggling to meet the requirement, reports Hans India. A total of 3,500 SATs covering the entire corporation limits are finding it hard to lift the waste produced by city residents. Garbage heaps are reportedly springing up at places where once bins were placed.
Following the civic body’s orders to pick up waste from around 600 houses a day, SATs are finding it an arduous task to function efficiently. Moreover, of the 3,500 autos, only 2,500 remain operational, covering 21 lakh households and dumping garbage at transfer stations.
According to GHMC officials, 350 SATs were recently added to extend the network for door-to-door garbage collection. “Earlier, each tipper had to cover around 800 homes in a day, but later it turned out to be experimentally feasible to visit a home only once a week and collect garbage. Later, they were asked to collect from 600 households,” they informed.
GHMC says it will take time for waste collection to be settled.
