India Plastic Challenge–Hackathon 2021 launched

Union Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar has announced the India Plastic Challenge–Hackathon 2021 to promote innovative solutions to mitigate plastic pollution and develop alternatives to single-use plastics. The Hackathon is open to start-ups /entrepreneurs and students of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs).

“India is taking all steps to ensure that the country becomes free of single-use plastic by 2022 as envisioned by Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” Mr Javadekar said while launching the campaign, reports the Press Information Bureau.

The GIZ, UN Environment Programme (UNEP), and Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) are organizing the two-month-long awareness campaign, along with the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Government of India. The campaign will comprise four online regional events and a social media campaign to spread the message of mitigating plastic pollution to a wider audience. The regional events will include interactive sessions on various themes related to single-use plastics and plastic waste management and cover a wide range of stakeholders from local bodies, pollution control boards, industry, civil society organizations, and citizens.
