Indore to mentor Ethiopian city as part of UN-HABITAT campaign

As part of the UN-HABITAT’s Waste Wise Cities Campaign, Indore has been selected as a supporter city to assist one of the cities of Ethiopia in implementing a solid waste management system.

Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) additional commissioner Rajneesh Kasera told The Times of India that they would be providing assistance to the city of Bahir Dar, Ethiopia in handling solid waste management efficiently. “This programme is meant to clean up and establish sustainable waste management practices in 20 cities around the world by 2022,” Kasera said while speaking to TOI. He said that applications were invited from different cities to apply either as Changemaker City to take up the challenge, or as Supporter City, assisting a Changemaker City (civic and technical twinning).

After evaluation, Indore was selected as Supporter City and paired with the city of Bahir Dar. The campaign focuses on best solid waste management practices, which includes improving the collection and transportation of waste, promoting 5R principles – reuse, reduce, recycle, rethink and refuse the single-use items, among other efforts to change public behaviour towards waste.
