The Karnataka govt has sought the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike’s (BBMP) views on setting up an independent new agency to look at the functioning of seven waste processing units. The collection and transportation of garbage will remain the Palike’s job.

After receiving complaints that the BBMP had failed to maintain the waste processing units, the State Government has directed the civic agency to prepare a report on the pros and cons of setting up such a body, estimated to cost Rs 1000 crore, reports The Bangalore Mirror.

The responsibility of collection and transportation of waste on a daily basis, however, may continue to lie with the BBMP initially.

In the last state budget, Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa had also talked about establishing a separate body for the solid waste management division of the BBMP that is currently plagued by complaints of “interference” from corporators and failure to segregate at source.
