The Kerala State Level Monitoring Committee (SLMC) appointed by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) has given a poor rating to a large number of local bodies within the state for their solid waste management efforts.
“The data on solid waste management reveals that certain local bodies have made a considerable achievement in the field but a large number of local bodies have registered a poor performance,” said the supplementary report submitted by A.V. Ramakrishna Pillai, SLMC chairman, before the NGT’s Principal Bench, New Delhi.
The Hindu reports that directions given to the District Level Monitoring Committees to conduct periodic trainings as well as the direction to the District Collectors/District Magistrates to prepare District Environment Plans have failed to yield results. The District Collectors need to follow strict directions from this tribunal, it said.
