The Ludhiana MC officials have started a campaign to educate its staff and citizens about responsible waste management practices. This has been prompted by indications that the Punjab solid waste management and cleanliness and sanitation bylaws will be notified soon, reports The Times of India.

Under these bylaws the source segregation of dry and wet waste is mandatory. The MC has the power to issue challans to defaulters for not practising source segregation or littering in the open. In certain places, officials have started the process to take strict measures against defaulters. Also, under these by-laws the charges for the door-to-door garbage collection are fixed.

The residents welfare associations, market associations, gated localities having area more than 5,000 sq m, hotels, restaurants, etc. have been asked to start composting of wet waste on-site while dry waste will be given to the rag pickers.

Those caught for the dumping of solid waste in water bodies/sewerage will be charged a fine of Rs 5000.
