The plastic manufacturers and traders’ association in Ludhiana has announced yet another agitation against the state government’s decision to impose a plastic ban starting August 1.
In 2016, the state government had announced a ban on plastic bags but implementation has been delayed owing to political interference and resistance from plastic manufacturers and traders’ associations, who contend that the move will lead to financial losses. Mayor Balkar Sandhu announced to ban plastic carry bags from August 1 after the MC general house approved the resolution in mid-July, reports Hindustan Times.
Ludhiana has been struggling with manage its waste. The Punjab Pollution Control Board fined the municipal corporation last week with Rs 1.8 crores as environmental compensation for failing to deal with over 16 lakh metric tonnes of legacy waste at the main dump site, following directions from the National Green Tribunal.
