MahaGenco to trial biobriquette use in coal plant

Public power company Maharashtra State Power Generation Company (MahaGenco) is planning to trial the use of biomass briquettes in its coal-fired power plant in Parli, Beed district, Maharashtra state.

One of the three 250 MW thermal units should be fuelled with 5 to 7% of briquettes made from agricultural and plant waste, such as bamboo, as further stated in the report.

MahaGenco has issued an expression of interest to procure the biobriquettes, which should have a maximum moisture content of 9% and a calorific value of 3,500 kcal (non-torrefied) or 4,500 kcal (torrefied). At full capacity, the three units are currently fuelled with a total of up to 12,000 tpd of coal.
