Mangaluru Corporation is planning to purchase several new waste collection and transportation vehicles by early next year. The decision is expected to help those living in less accessible narrow lanes where waste collection is hard. Larger waste vehicles are unable to lift garbage daily as garbage collecting vehicles cannot reach such places. The Municipal Council has proposed to introduce hand carts or battery operated tricycles in such places to collect waste, reports The Hindu.

The Mangaluru Corporation is in the midst of reviewing its waste management plan since its seven-year contract with Antony Waste Handling Cell Pvt. Ltd., which collects and transports solid waste expires in January 2022.

Currently, the handling of solid waste, including the purchase of vehicles, their operation and maintenance and human resource required in the collection and transportation of waste have been completely outsourced to the commissionaire. However, the civic authorities want to now manage waste collection and transportation themselves.
