Meerut gets its first MRF center

UP’s Meerut city has finally got its first Materials Recovery Facility (MRF). Plant in-charge Saurabh Kumar Chaubey informed news agency ANI, “Entire garbage from city area is brought here, segregated and then treated for recycling.”

Proper waste collection and disposal is a great challenge for civic agencies in Meerut city due to the unavailability of treatment and disposal facilities for municipal solid waste (MSW). A recent study had reported that 0.53 kg per capita of waste is generated in the city each day, all of which is dumped unscientifically on the outskirts city.

Last year, the National Green Tribunal had slammed the Meerut Nagar Nigam for failure to manage MSW in the city and directed it to take immediate remedial action. Consequently, the Nagar Nigam has started clearing legacy waste at the site.
