The Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) is implementing a pilot project for 100% segregation at source in the suburb of Andheri West.

Self-help groups will be involved in sorting and reusing of dry waste, reports The Indian Express.

The MCGM’s solid waste management (SWM) department is trying to promote the treatment and reuse of waste generated from the ward-level at source and thus eliminate dependence on dumping grounds. Currently, the 33MT waste from the Andheri West ward is sent to the dumping ground via trucks.

If successful, the same strategy will be implemented in all other wards.

The BMC has also made it compulsory for bulk waste generators, including commercial establishments and housing complexes that generate over 100 kg of waste daily or have an area of more than 20,000 sq m, to manage their own waste.
