North Delhi Municipal Corporation has approved a proposal for setting up a second waste-to-energy plant at Ranikhera after signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOC).
The civic body is at present generating 4,500 metric tonnes of waste daily. Of this 2,300 MT is processed at the Narela-Bawana waste-to-energy plant while the rest is being dumped at the Bhalswa landfill.
About 2,200 MT waste generated from Karol Bagh, City-Sadar Paharganj and Narela zones will reportedly be sent to this plant. The proposed plant will have a capacity to use 2,500 MT of waste every day and generate refuse-derived fuel in minimum quantity, reports The Times of India.
The civic body will help Indian Oil or its concessionaire in obtaining grants and requisite permission for the project from the ministry of housing and urban affairs and other ministries. The IOC will be responsible for the selection and appointment of concessionaire, technology adopted for processing waste and the out product. “The concessionaire will use the processed waste for producing plastic or syngas and compressed biogas. It will pay the corporation an amount per ton of MSW supplied,” said an official.
The corporation, however, will be responsible for providing land at Ranikhera or next to Bhalswa site free of cost to IOC.
