The Kerala government was asked by the National Green Tribunal to expedite the biomining of legacy waste at Brahmapuram.

A private firm had submitted a proposal to carry out biomining of the waste several months ago. However, the work couldn’t be awarded due to objection from opposition councillors. Now, the corporation has been asked to award the work immediately. The NGT has also asked the authorities to construct a leachate treatment plant for the existing plant without delay.

The NGT has warned of strict action against the state’s chief secretary and Kochi corporation officials, if action to clear the legacy waste is not taken at the earliest, reports The Times of India.
