The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has pulled up the Maharashtra government for failing to prohibit the dumping of municipal waste into the Godavari River near Trimbakeshwar.

According to an NGT bench led by NGT Chairperson Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel and Justice Sudhir Agarwal, sewage generation is in the region of 4.5–5 million litres per day, but treatment capacity is barely 1 MLD.

The remaining untreated sewage is being released into the river, which is unfit for bathing, according to primary water quality criteria and maybe consumed by people and other living beings, posing a health risk, according to the report.

The Bench expressed its dissatisfaction with the government for its inaction despite the NGT’s repeated decisions over the last two years, reports news agency PTI.
