Okhla city council to determine fate of WtE plant

The WtE plant in Okhla was subject to heavy public opposition in the past. Residents criticised that the plant had been emitting thick black smoke and had covered areas of the city in ash in 2013 (see also Issue 2013-02). The Central Pollution Control Board´s monitoring reports revealed that emissions exceeded limits throughout 2012 and 2013. Now it was announced that the National Green Tribunal scheduled a hearing for October 2014 to determine the plant´s fate. The plant opened in 2012 and incinerates 472,500 tons of waste every year while generating 17 MW of electricity (see also Issue 2012-06), according to The Times of India.
