Only 1% of e-waste reportedly treated in Maharashtra in 2019-20

Maharashtra generated more than 10 lakh metric tonne (MT) of electronic waste but recycled or dismantled less than 1% of it in 2019-20. Meanwhile, 70% of the total 84 lakh MT of solid waste generated in the state was scientifically treated in the previous financial year. The total waste generated was similar in volume as in 2018-19, and only 53% of it was treated.

According to The Times of India, Nandkumar Gurav, regional officer, Maharashtra Pollution Control Board, said, “Of the daily waste generated, 22,685 tonne or 98.7% was being collected and 15,980 tonne or 70% was being scientifically treated. The waste being scientifically treated has touched 80% in 2021. We are finding it very difficult to audit waste generation and need a common platform to address this, and this is a key recommendation from MPCB to be included in the State Climate Action Plan.”
