Operational Guidelines for SWM Urban 2.0 released

Almost a month after the ceremonial launch of Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM) Urban 2.0 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 1, 2021, the Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), Mr Hardeep Singh Puri launched its operational guidelines on October 27. Guidelines for AMRUT 2.0 were also launched by the Minister during the event.

As per the Ministry, the guidelines have been drafted after multiple rounds of stakeholder consultations and feedback. The budget outlay of SBM-U 2.0 is Rs 1,41,600 crore.

The launch ceremony witnessed the signing of a tripartite MoU of States/UTs and nearly 4,800 ULBs with MoHUA, within a 24-hour timeline. As per the MoU, the Government of India, in partnership with the States/UTs and ULBs is committed to making all cities ‘Garbage Free’ and ‘Water Secure’, in order to contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 2030 which will ultimately improve the quality of life and ease of living of urban populations, thus leading to urban transformation.

The Mission 2.0 will also focus on source segregation of solid waste, utilising the principles of 3Rs (reduce, reuse, and recycle), scientific processing of all types of municipal solid waste and remediation of legacy dumpsites for effective solid waste management.
