Pune cracks down on waste offenders at night time

In a bid to improve its Swacch Survekshan ranking, Pune Municipal Corporation has deployed sanitary inspectors for night patrolling in order to fine citizens throwing garbage in violation of the Solid Waste Management Rules 2016.

The PMC observed that many residents were not handing over their waste to the authorised door to door waste collectors and ghantagadi during the day. Instead, they were throwing their garbage during the late evening or night hours to avoid getting noticed.

Pune Mirror reports that a seven-member special squad has been formed by the PMC and in less than a week, over one hundred people have been fined. The sanitary inspectors patrol the streets at night and record violations on camera. The next morning, the inspectors visit the offender’s residence with a challan for the fine.
