Following protests by locals, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) standing committee has decided to revoke its plan to set up a garbage processing and disposal facility in Bavdhan.

The PMC Committee approved a local corporator’s demand to cancel the civic administration’s land acquisition plan in Bavdhan. It was argued that due to rapid urbanisation in Bavdhan, the proposed garbage depot is now surrounded by residential properties.

The Indian Express reports that land acquisition for the Bavdhan facility was proposed in 1993, following the closure of the Kothrud garbage depot. However, during the last twenty-six odd years, no budgetary allocations were made – nor was any progress made in terms of constructing the facility.

The PMC has been facing residents’ protests in many areas for starting a garbage depot or processing plant in their respective locality. At present, most of the garbage processing is carried out in Uruli Devachi and Phursungi villages.
