SBM-U’s latest newsletter released

The latest newsletter of the Swacch Bharat Mission (Urban) titled “Swachhata Sandesh” (May-June 2020) was recently released on the SBM-U’s website. In this edition, the focus is on innovative measures taken by states and cities to manage their Municipal Solid Waste (MSW). Below is an excerpt:

“As an instance, to ensure that the recycled products are put to good use, the Greater Chennai Corporation has introduced an innovative solution – Madras Waste Exchange. It is a ‘trading platform for municipal solid waste’ and is India’s first waste exchange for municipal solid waste. The exchange is helping Chennai attain zero waste status by bringing the concept of ‘Circular Economy’ into waste management.

On December 2019, SolidWasteIndia had reported that www.madraswasteexchange.com boasts of a variety of products made from dry and wet waste such as school bags, slippers, vermi-compost, manure, coconut powder and lemon dishwash. Approximately 2000 scrap dealers and over 500 buyers and sellers
have registered on the platform.

The newsletter also includes other news updates from the Ministry of Housing
& Urban Affairs (MoHUA) in the area of MSWM and sanitation.
