Srinagar WtE plant stuck in limbo

Four years after the National Green Tribunal (NGT) passed an order for setting up a 5 MW waste-to-energy (WtE) plant in Srinagar, its installation remains stalled by procedural delays. The plant was to be installed in Srinagar’s landfill site, Achan, on the outskirts of Srinagar.

The Housing and Urban Development Department, Power Development Department and Centec Bio Energy Private are yet to sign the Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) that would have paved the way for setting up the WtE plant.

The Kashmir Monitor has quoted an official of the Housing and Urban Development Department as saying that the PPA of WtE plant will be signed after State Electricity Regulatory Commission (SERC) finalizes the tariff. Incidentally, SERC was abolished on October 31 when J&K officially became a Union Territory. There is no information on its reconstitution as yet.
