‘The pandemic provides a great opportunity for entrepreneurship in the waste sector’

Known as one of India’s finest experts on Solid Waste Management, Prof Brajesh Dubey, IIT Kharagpur, believes that the country’s waste management system can benefit immensely from homegrown technologies developed by Indian entrepreneurs. In an exclusive video interview with SolidWasteIndia, Prof Dubey discusses the need for better-trained waste professionals who can implement technological solutions best suited to address India’s unique waste management needs and requirements. The pandemic, he feels, provides an opportune moment for entrepreneurship backed by the government’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative.

DOES INDIA’S EDUCATION SYSTEM PROMOTE INNOVATION IN ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES?

Addressing the need for more training programs for waste professionals, Mr Dubey says the Indian education system now includes environmental issues as a part of its syllabus but there remains a lot to be done at the higher educational level.

“Civil Engineering programs traditionally focus on waste and waste-water treatment and it would be useful to introduce Solid Waste management as a specialized component,” says the Professor.
