The Thiruvananthapuram Corporation is planning to revive the usage of aerobic bins in the city. Over the years, a total of 520 such bin units were installed at 52 locations to process biodegradable waste at the community level. However, their use has been fairly irregular, resulting in neglect and poor maintenance, reports The Hindu.

The Corporation plans to repair the aerobic bins which are now in a dilapidated state. It has also decided to introduce a grading system for the bins to improve the utilisation of the bins and encourage local workers to ensure their proper upkeep. According to Corporation estimates, less than half of the bins are being used at present, as families who stay nearby do not use it. It has also been found that waste dumping continues, even near the bins.
