A budget of around EUR 200 million will flow into the installation of two new WtE plants at Kodungaiyur and at Perungudi. As was announced this week by the Times of India, the old landfills at those two locations would be shut down, with the two new WtE facilities serving as a replacement. The Perungudi WtE site is said to have a power production capacity of 26MW, while the Kodungaiyur plant is expected to produce 32MW of power. The project proposal still needs to be approved by the local government, but if approved, the tender process could start in around 6 weeks. Out of the EUR 200 million, around 10 % (EUR 20 million) will be invested in waste collection and the needed infrastructure. The project is likely to be carried out as a PPP (private-public-partnership) project and the duration of the contract is set to be 15 years at least. Recently it has been reported that Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) was supposing to work out a general action plan for solid waste management first and proceed with the planing of the WtE projects afterwards.
