Waste clearance at Salim Ali Sanctuary continues past Jan 31 deadline

Over 550 truckloads of construction waste has been removed from Pune’s Dr Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary during the last two weeks. It will take another 4-5 days to get the entire property free from the debris, reports The Times of India.

On Jan 14, Maharashtra’s Minister of Environment and Tourism Aaditya Thackeray had asked the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to remove illegally dumped debris at the sanctuary by January 31.

In October 2021, Members of ‘Save Dr Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary’ and residents of Kalyani nagar had held a sit-in fast to protest the dumping of rubble and debris at the 22-acre sanctuary over the last few years, prompting the state government to act.
