Waste segregation at source sees a jump in Bengaluru

Waste segregated at source in the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike’s (BBMP) limits has touched 33%, the highest-ever in the city. As per the latest figures, the civic body has collected 1,333 tonnes per day (TPD) of wet waste, up by 300 tonnes in less than a month.

While Bommanahalli and Yelahanka zones are on the top of the list, Bengaluru south and east zones feature on the bottom. About 2,604 TPD of waste continues to remain non-segregated.

The civic body is, however, yet to breach the half-way mark in wet waste collection as compared to the total collection of waste from residences and commercial establishments.

Some zones could be performing poorly because the new system of waste collection has not been implemented across all the 198 wards, reports Bangalore Mirror.

As per the new system, the BBMP sends separate vehicles to collect wet and dry waste. While the auto tipper collecting wet waste is expected to visit every household on a daily basis, the dry waste collectors are entrusted with the responsibility of collecting the waste twice a week. This arrangement, officials hope, will stop the waste from getting mixed at the source. All waste collection vehicles have been installed with GPS and Radio Frequency ID (RFID) cards to ensure better accountability.
