MoHUA Minister Mr Hardeep Singh Puri announced the winners of Swacch Survekshan 2020 on August 20. Here are the results:
Winning cities for Swacch Survekshan (Population more than one lakh): #1 – Indore (Madhya Pradesh), # 2 – Surat (Gujarat), # Rank 3 – Navi Mumbai (Maharashtra)
It was a hat-trick for Maharashtra which won the three top spots for cleanest cities with a population of less than one lakh: # 1 – Karad, # 2 – Saswad, # 3 – Lonavla.

Swachh Survekshan 2020 was carried out across 4242 ULBs from 4th to 31st January, 2020. The data collected through multifarious sources for 57 indicators (40 – Service Level Progress, 9 – Direct Observation and 8 – Citizen Feedback) have been compiled for ranking the cities.
In a bid to sustain on ground performances & efforts of cities and ensure continuous monitoring of service level progress, MoHUA introduced Swachh Survekshan League 2020 in the fifth edition. Marks obtained by the cities in Quarter 1 (Q1) and Quarter 2 (Q2) of the League were combined with Quarter 3 (Q3) marks.
MoHUA releases four new reports
Here is the detailed report on the world’s largest city-level cleanliness survey: The Swacch Survekshan 2020. The Minister also released a report titled Assessment of 97 Ganga Towns.
Another report released at the event focusses on one of the important components of SS-2020 – Innovations & Best Practices.Over 3000 ULBs had submitted innovative projects undertaken in the areas of waste management, behavior change, etc. Ujjain, MP won the award for the Best Citizen-led Initiative. Greater Chennai won the Best Mega-City Award in ‘Innovation & Best Practices’. The report includes innovations including green kiosks installed by GHMC and solar-powered twin-bins in Vita, Maharashtra, and e-rikshas for hazardous waste collection in Petlad, Gujarat.
A fourth report Social Media Initiatives summarizes the social media initiatives undertaken – and their impact – along with the survey to encourage and improve citizen participation during the cleanliness survey.
