Semi Underground Bins of 2.5 cum volumetric capacity in Visakhapatnam
Visakhapatnam is one among the four cities selected for the PM’s Excellence Award
under the Swachh Bharat Mission’s Urban Category based on the semi-underground bin system implemented under Smart City.
Supplied by Bengaluru-based Zonta Infratech, the project includes the installation & commissioning of 50 Semi Underground Bins (see video above) at 25 designated locations in the ABD area under the Greater Visakhapatnam Smart City Corporation Limited (GVSCCL).
Project operation and maintenance, including collection and transportation of waste from these 50 semi-underground bins for a period of 5 years, is also managed by Zonta.
GVSCCL has put substantial emphasis on Solid Waste Management by Implementing
Modern Semi Underground Bins equipped with Bin Fill Level Sensors and an Online
smart monitoring system. As soon as the semi-underground bin is full, the sensor
attached over it detects and sends a message to the City Operations Centre so that a
vehicle can be dispatched to empty the bin.
“We presented the semi-underground bins system taken up under the smart city for the
SBM urban category of PM awards for excellence. Vizag is shortlisted as one amongst
the four cities of the country in this category,” said Ms G Srijana, Municipal Commissioner, Visakhapatnam.
Zonta Infratech’s Managing Director Mr Raj Kumar was ecstatic as he informed Solid
Waste India that this is a nomination based on the sustainability and viability of the project. “I want to share the fact that Operation & Maintenance (O&M) is a key aspect for any system to deliver long term benefits. In India, we create assets and give scant to their O&M. I am glad that Vizag is making concerted efforts to do the O&M properly and that has delivered this success,” said Mr Kumar.
