The Mangaluru Smart Limited (MSCL) is going to introduce a new barcode system for efficient implementation of solid waste management (SWM) in all the 60 wards of Mangaluru city.
ETGovernment.com reports that MSCL has already introduced the system on a pilot basis in Mannagudda ward, where all the 2,000 houses will be given barcodes. All door-to-door waste collection vehicles will have to scan the barcode at the gates of houses, so that the city corporation can track its movement on a real-time basis. The system will be introduced in all the 60 wards soon.
At present, 132 vehicles used for solid waste management are being tracked through GPS. A command and control centre is being set up at a cost of Rs 74 crore to make public administration and services more efficient. In addition to traffic management, air quality monitoring, transport management and disaster management, the centre will also monitor the movement of all vehicles used for SWM.
