The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagar Palike (BBMP) has issued a notification requiring all construction and demolition (C&D) waste generators to pay Rs 134 per metric tonne to dispose of the debris. Non-compliance will invite penal action under the Environment Protection Act 1986 and the Karnataka Municipal Corporation Act, 1976.
The rules are applicable to all private and government C&D waste generators, including residential, commercial, industrial, railways, airport and defence establishments.
The BBMP is also building a new C&D waste management facility in Kannur which will take a few months to become operational. It will have a capacity to process 750 tonnes of C&D per day, reports The Times of India.
