The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) is conducting inspections of stores and manufacturing units in the city to combat the use of single-use plastic (SUPs).

The Joint Commissioner of Solid Waste Management, Mr Sarfaraz Khan, has asked all zonal officers to implement a complete ban on SUP within BBMP limits.

The BBMP recently seized 200 kg of illegal plastic and imposed a punishment of Rs 6 lakh during a surprise inspection of an Agri enterprises plant in the city.

If shops are found to be breaking the BBMP order, they will face penalties. Says Mr Khan, “SUPs are banned in Bengaluru and the state of Karnataka by an order of the government. As most are aware, due to the three COVID waves, we could not enforce the rule very strictly. This has allowed SUPs to come back slowly into the system. Now that Covid cases are coming down, we have taken it very strictly to ban SUPs in the city.”
