Bhubaneswar to take tough measures to tackle C&D waste and plastics

Beginning July 1, the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) will step up its campaign against accumulated construction and demolition (C&D) debris as well as single-use plastic in public areas.

The action was taken in response to a letter the State Pollution Control Board (SPCB) sent to urban local governments requesting that single-use plastic be banned as of July 1. However, the BMC chose to include C&D garbage collection in its campaign.

Currently, enforcement against C&D and plastic waste is handled by a central team. The standing committee has given the BMC permission to create the squads and direct them to police the laws on plastic and C&D waste. According to BMC authorities, the creation of three additional squads for raids and inspections has been approved by the standing committee on waste and sanitation.

Reportedly, plastic constitutes 60% of the total MSW generated in Bhubaneswar, according to The Times of India.
